Shared language must be clear enough to help people working together in public health, experts say

A large group of family medicine researchers, educators and clinicians propose a framework of definitions to clarify the similarities, differences and relationships between common terms used by those involved in population health, community health and public health. They write that shared language must be clear enough to help and not hinder people working together as they come to a mutual understanding of roles, responsibilities and actions in their joint work.

Women mostly satisfied with egg donation; some claim problems

Two-thirds of women who donated eggs to fertility clinics reported satisfaction with the process, but 16 percent complained of subsequent physical symptoms and 20 percent reported lasting psychological effects, according to the first study to examine the long-term effects of donation.

New algorithm can help ED physicians to reduce number of heart failure deaths

Physicians can reduce the number of heart failure deaths and unnecessary hospital admissions by using a new computer-based algorithm developed at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) that calculates each patient's individual risk of death. Published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, the algorithm improves upon clinical decision-making and determines whether or not a patient with heart failure should be admitted to hospital.

Ember Therapeutics reports initial results from BMP-7 Phase II trial in patients with moderate osteoarthritis of the knee

Ember Therapeutics, Inc., a privately held, New York-based biopharmaceutical company that is developing targeted therapies for osteoarthritis, kidney fibrosis, and other indications using Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP)-7, announced today initial results from the Phase II(a) trial of local BMP-7 administration in patients with moderate osteoarthritis of the knee.
