Shire plc, the global specialty biopharmaceutical company, today presented positive results from its first Phase III study (TKT 032) evaluating safety and efficacy of velaglucerase alfa, its investigational enzyme replacement therapy for the treatment of Type 1 Gaucher disease. The data were presented in an oral presentation at the Lysosomal Disease Network (LDN) World Symposium in Miami, Florida.
Reuters reports that former President Bill Clinton will return to Haiti to "jump-start" the country's post-earthquake reconstruction. Clinton will head the first meeting of Haiti's reconstruction commission, "part of a sorely needed effort to better coordinate international aid efforts, [Prime Minister Jean-Max] Bellerive said." Bellerive hopes the meeting will "establish clear-cut guidelines" for distributing more than $5 billion in aid from 140 countries following the Jan. 12 earthquake (Brown, 6/16).
STAAR Surgical Company, a leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of minimally invasive ophthalmic products, today reported results for the second quarter ended July 2, 2010. Revenue for the period grew 3.7% to $13.6 million with the revenue from core products, IOLs and ICLs, increasing by 7%. For the first half of 2010 core product revenues increased by 11% reflecting market share gains by STAAR.
