Caltech researchers identify gene that causes severe insomnia when overactivated

Caltech biologists have performed the first large-scale screening in a vertebrate animal for genes that regulate sleep, and have identified a gene that when overactivated causes severe insomnia. Expression of the gene, neuromedin U (Nmu), also seems to serve as nature's stimulant-fish lacking the gene take longer to wake up in the morning and are less active during the day.

Cook Medical receives clearance for Evolution® biliary controlled-release uncovered stent

The Food and Drug Administration has granted 510(k) clearance for the Evolution® Biliary Controlled-Release Uncovered Stent from Cook Medical. The biliary stent adds to Cook's line of Evolution controlled-release stents for the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. A recent study published in the Journal Emerging Microbes and Infections has highlighted the emergence of a novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variant with mutations in the membrane protein-encoding gene. Two potential mutations, M:I82T and M:V70L, have been identified within the transmembrane helices, which are expected to improve viral fitness by modulating glucose uptake during replication.
