Celsion Corporation has announced that promising Phase I clinical results evaluating ThermoDox for the treatment of recurrent chest wall (RCW) breast cancer were presented by Duke University investigators on Sunday, April 5 at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Society for Thermal Medicine (STM) in Tucson, Arizona.
Some drugs may be more effective the longer they last inside the body. To prevent such drugs from being broken down too rapidly, pharmaceutical manufacturers often attach a fluorine-containing structure called a trifluoromethyl group. However, the processes now used require harsh reaction conditions or only work in a small number of cases, limiting their usefulness for synthesizing new drug candidates for testing.
Computer scientists and biochemists at the University of Washington two years ago launched an ambitious project harnessing the brainpower of computer gamers to solve medical problems. The game, Foldit, turns one of the hardest problems in molecular biology into a game a bit reminiscent of Tetris. Thousands of people have now played a game that asks them to fold a protein rather than stack colored blocks or rescue a princess.
