Embryonic stem cells could provide a new way of testing drugs for dangerous side effects, according to a leading British researcher.
The development of more effective cancer drugs could be a step nearer thanks to the discovery, by scientists at Warwick Medical School, of how an inbuilt 'security check' operates to guarantee cells divide with the correct number of chromosomes.
A research team led by Dr. Ciriaco A. Piccirillo of McGill University's Department of Microbiology and Immunology has discovered that in some individuals, the specialized immunoregulatory T-cells that regulate the body's autoimmune reactions may lose their effectiveness and become "lazy" over time, leading to the onset of type 1 diabetes.
The business fills a niche in the world market by manufacturing custom-made tools (antibodies) used in the study of proteins. Antibodies for use in typical laboratory subjects such as mammals are easily obtained, but it is very difficult to find these tools for use with other organisms, such as fish, plants, and algae. Recognizing the need for these products through his own research at Mount A over the last six years, Campbell appreciated the innovative applications of his findings.
This week, nearly 1,200 life-saving advertisements will go up on city buses, bus shelters, rail and subway stations across the Nation displaying a message of hope for those who have served their country and may be facing an emotional crisis. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is advertising its Suicide Prevention Hotline through Jan. 9, 2011.
