​Researchers from the Universitat Aut-noma de Barcelona (UAB), led by F-tima Bosch, have shown for the first time that it is possible to cure diabetes in large animals with a single session of gene therapy. As published this week in Diabetes, the principal journal for research on the disease, after a single gene therapy session, the dogs recover their health and no longer show symptoms of the disease.
A high profile study involving researchers at the University of Limerick's Graduate Entry Medical School has shown that surgical operations in which surgeons-in-training are involved are as safe as operations performed in which trainees have no operative role. The new study addressed earlier studies which raised concerns that the presence of surgeons-in-training may raise the level of risk involved.
Expertise from across the University of Leeds is to be channelled into a new research centre that aims to progress the understanding, treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
In vitro toxicity testing is rapidly being adopted in the pharmaceutical, chemical, and cosmetics industries, for example, as an alternative to animal studies to predict adverse health effects of drugs and personal care products and the health consequences of environmental exposures.
