How U.S. Hispanic/Latino adults perceive their own social standing, relative to the general population may be an important factor contributing to their overall cardiovascular health, according to new research published today in the Journal of the American Heart Association, an open-access journal of the American Heart Association.
Researchers from the Computer Vision Center (CVC) have developed a new tool to quantify the myocardial perfusion damage in people who had a heart attack or an angina. Having been validated in 200 patients, it can help improve and speed up diagnosis of the damage, offering a quantitative, repeatable and objective measure of the blood irrigation level of the heart tissue.
More than a quarter of the 30 million people with diabetes in the United States depend on daily injections of insulin to maintain their blood glucose levels in a healthy range. Scientists are investigating many techniques to help treat or potentially even cure many of these patients by increasing the body's own insulin-producing pancreatic "beta" cells.
In a genome sequencing study of 74 neuroblastoma tumors in children, scientists at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) found that patients with changes in two genes, ARID1A and ARID1B, survive only a quarter as long as patients without the changes. The discovery could eventually lead to early identification of patients with aggressive neuroblastomas who may need additional treatments.
Every day, thousands of volunteer medical relief groups offer care to patients and assistance to understaffed medical teams in remote, underdeveloped locations around the world. Often these groups of doctors and nurses come for a short time, offer care and return home.
