The Scientist today unveiled the Top 10 Innovations of 2011 and selected Aspect Imaging's M2™ compact high-performance MRI imaging system as one the winners of this award. The Scientist invited members of the life science community to submit descriptions of exciting tools that made an impact in research this year and asked a panel of expert judges to evaluate the technologies.
Five scientists from the University of California, San Diego and its School of Medicine have been awarded almost $12 million in new grants from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to conduct stem cell-based research into regenerating spinal cord injuries, repairing gene mutations that cause amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and finding new drugs to treat heart failure and Alzheimer's disease.
Medicalis Corporation announced today the launch of its Coordinated Imaging Care Solution (CICS), an integrated technology platform that provides clinical decision support, e-ordering, and extensive quality tracking that enables comparative effectiveness in medical imaging. Skin from a factory - this has long been the dream of pharmacologists, chemists and doctors. Research has an urgent need for large quantities of 'skin models', which can be used to determine if products such as creams and soaps, cleaning agents, medicines and adhesive bandages are compatible with skin, or if they instead will lead to irritation or allergic reactions for the consumer. Such test results are seen as more meaningful than those from animal experiments, and can even make such experiments largely superfluous.
