For older women undergoing mastectomy for breast cancer, direct-to-implant breast reconstruction provides good outcomes in a single-step procedure, while avoiding some of the inconvenience and risks of staged approaches to breast reconstruction, reports a study in the February issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
An international team of scientists from the Max-Planck-Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization, Cornell University the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon, the University Medicine Göttingen, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and the Institut Non-Linéaire de Nice have developed a new low-energy method for terminating life-threatening cardiac fibrillation of the heart.
A recent study shows that patients given beta-blockers may actually be at increased risk of having an adverse cardiac event during a noncardiac surgical procedure. Risk of irregular heartbeat and worsening of symptoms in patients with existing heart disease also seemed to increase, but to a lesser degree.
AmeriCares and Baxter International Inc. have teamed to deliver additional lifesaving intravenous solutions to Haiti as part of their ongoing effort to stem the cholera outbreak. AmeriCares has been working around the clock to distribute IV solutions, oral rehydration salts, antibiotics, hand sanitizers and other critical aid since the outbreak was reported in October.
