Stroke prevention, treatment and rehabilitation have come a long way in the time since Neurologist Dr. David Spence of Western University began treating patients. "My first day on call, I was paged to the emergency department for a patient with a stroke. When I answered the page, from the cafeteria, I was told to go ahead and finish my dinner. There was nothing that could be done for him."
A research group led by Takashi Saito, of the Ehime University Graduate School of Medicine, developed a 2-photon excitation light-sheet fluorescence microscope which (1) lowers phototoxicity, (2) extends the field of view, and (3) heightens spatial resolution.
Researchers at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine have identified that a gene critical to clearing up unnecessary proteins plays a role in brain development and contributes to the development of autism spectrum disorders and schizophrenia.
Vegetarians appear to have a healthier biomarker profile than meat-eaters, and this applies to adults of any age and weight, and is also unaffected by smoking and alcohol consumption, according to a new study in over 166,000 UK adults, being presented at this week's European Congress on Obesity (ECO), held online this year.
