Australian researchers from The University of Queensland have launched a global search to discover antibiotics capable of combating superbug bacteria that are resistant to current antibiotics.
Media are invited to participate in the science and technology tours being held in conjunction with the Pittsburgh G-20 Summit Sept. 24-25. Twelve one-hour tours—hosted by the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center—are being offered on Monday, Sept. 21. They will highlight the science and technology that is driving the region's economy.
The 2008 Omnibus Budget, signed by President George Bush on Monday, includes $1,860,000 for the CDC Fragile X Public Health Initiative, more than double the current program funding level.
A number of new technologies and surgical techniques promise to "personalize" orthopedic operations such as hip and knee replacement, according to research to be presented at an educational program at Hospital for Special Surgery on October 15 and 16. During "Computer Assisted Orthopaedic Surgery: Review of Emerging Technologies," prominent orthopedic researchers will discuss how innovative technologies can improve surgical outcomes.
