The federal government on Monday granted Texas a waiver that could mean billions more in Medicaid dollars to hospitals over the next few years in return for having them work together to provide better care for the poor. ... State lawmakers cut deeply into the Medicaid budget this year, in part by requiring all Texas Medicaid patients to be enrolled in private health maintenance organizations for their doctor care. In recent years, patients in most urban areas were covered by HMOs, while patients in many rural counties and the Rio Grande Valley had their doctor bills paid directly by Medicaid.
Taking a new approach toward tuberculosis therapy, a UCLA-led research team has devised a potential drug regimen that could cut the treatment time by up to 75 percent, while simultaneously reducing the risk that patients could develop drug-resistant TB.
Pharmasset, Inc. announced today the pricing of an underwritten public offering of 3,300,000 shares of its common stock at an offering price of $46.33 per share. Of the shares being sold, Pharmasset is selling 2,300,000 shares and the selling stockholders are selling 1,000,000 shares. Pharmasset expects to receive net proceeds, after deducting the underwriting discount and estimated offering expenses, of approximately $101.5 million.
A Yale research team has found that by tinkering with the surface properties of drug-loaded nanoparticles, they can potentially direct these particles to specific cells in the brain.
