Scientists have identified a molecule found on human cells and some animal cells that could be a useful target for drugs against chikungunya virus infection and related diseases, according to new research published in the journal Nature.
Santarus, Inc., a specialty biopharmaceutical company, today announced that new data from open-label studies evaluating the efficacy and safety of the investigational drug RHUCIN for the treatment of acute attacks of angioedema in patients with Hereditary Angioedema were presented at the 7th C1 Inhibitor Deficiency Workshop on May 20 - 22, 2011 in Budapest, Hungary.
After 70 years, antibiotics are still the primary treatment for halting the spread of bacterial infections. But the prevalence of antibiotic resistance is now outpacing the rate of new drug discovery and approval. A microbiologist at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) has discovered a different approach: Instead of killing the bacteria, why not disarm them, quashing disease without the worry of antibiotic resistance?
