Named for Friedrich Best, who characterized the disease in 1905, Best disease, also known as vitelliform macular dystrophy, affects children and young adults and can cause severe declines in central vision as patients age.
In the past decade, the number of Kentucky babies starting life with a drug dependency, or neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), has skyrocketed from 1.3 per 1,000 births to 19 per 1,000 births.
Dominion Diagnostics (Dominion) has recently developed and validated one of the first clinical quantitative assays for the drug tapentadol (Nucynta(TM)) performed by liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Tapentadol, recently approved for use by the FDA, is a centrally-active analgesic that has demonstrated efficacy in pain relief with improved gastrointestinal tolerability compared to other opioids for pain management.
By our first birthday, we've acquired over 400 bacterial passengers in our gastrointestinal tract. Our gut microbes, or "bugs," work to keep our complex and diverse gut ecosystem in balance. Unfortunately, the trials of daily life-stressful events, aging, diet, or immune challenges-can be hard on these bugs. Standard Process Inc. introduces a new product, ProSynbiotic, to help our body maintain a healthy, balanced gut ecosystem.
