Eisai receives new action date for FDA priority review of eribulin mesylate NDA for metastatic breast cancer

Eisai Inc. announced today that it has received notification from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that the agency expects to complete priority review of the eribulin mesylate New Drug Application (NDA) for locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer on or before December 30, 2010, which is a three month extension from the original Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) action date of September 30, 2010.

New Westchester Montefiore Laser and Eye Center to offer ophthalmology services

The new Montefiore Laser and Eye Center recently opened its doors to provide comprehensive care to Westchester patients at the Montefiore Medical Specialists of Westchester in Scarsdale, New York. Seven board-certified ophthalmologists from the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Montefiore Medical Center provide patients with specialty emphasis in pediatric ophthalmology, oculoplastic surgery, glaucoma, cornea and laser refractive surgery.

Supreme Court rules generic drug makers can challenge branded drug companies' wording in patent applications

The U.S. Supreme Court handed a victory to generic-drug companies Tuesday, ruling they can file certain legal counterclaims against brand-drug companies in an effort to get their cheaper copycat medicines on the market. The court, in an opinion written by Justice Elena Kagan, ruled unanimously that generic-drug makers should be allowed to challenge the way brand-name manufacturers describe their patents to the Food and Drug Administration.

Study finds nearly 10-fold increase in eye injuries during robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy

A study presented at the ANESTHESIOLOGY 2012 annual meeting found that during the years 2000-2009, eye injuries during robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) increased nearly 10-fold, from a .07 percent incidence rate to .42 percent.
