Researchers uncover novel pathogenic mechanism in Huntington's disease

Researchers from the Institute of Neurosciences of the University of Barcelona and the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute described a mechanism, the increase of proteinaceous synthesis, which takes part in the degeneration of the type of neurons that are affected in Huntington's disease, a genetic neurodegenerative disease.

UAMS Myeloma Center receives $542,486 grant from Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Brian Walker, Ph.D., with the Myeloma Center at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences has received a $542,486, three-year grant from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to look at changes in the DNA sequence that effects the development and advancement of multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells in the blood.

New T cell engineering approach can improve success rate of immune-cell therapies

Clinical trials using patients' own immune cells to target tumors have yielded promising results. However, this approach usually works only if the patients also receive large doses of drugs designed to help immune cells multiply rapidly, and those drugs have life-threatening side effects. Now a team of MIT engineers has devised a way to deliver the necessary drugs by smuggling them on the backs of the cells sent in to fight the tumor. That way, the drugs reach only their intended targets, greatly reducing the risk to the patient.
