Synergy Pharmaceuticals commences dosing in Phase IIa clinical trial of SP-304 in CC patients

Synergy Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a developer of new drugs to treat gastrointestinal disorders and diseases, announced today the initiation of dosing in a Phase IIa clinical trial of SP-304 in patients with chronic constipation (CC). This is a Phase IIa, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 14-day repeat, oral, dose-escalation study in patients with chronic constipation.

Antibiotic use during peripartum period linked to greater risk of inflammatory condition in offspring

A study by researchers at the University of Chicago Medicine shows that when mice that are genetically susceptible to developing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) were given antibiotics during late pregnancy and the early nursing period, their offspring were more likely to develop an inflammatory condition of the colon that resembles human IBD.

Gladstone Institute researcher to receive Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology

The non-profit Inamori Foundation (President: Dr. Kazuo Inamori) today announced that Dr. Shinya Yamanaka will receive its 26th annual Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology, which for 2010 focuses on the fields of Biotechnology and Medical Technology. Dr. Yamanaka, 47, will receive the award for his pioneering work in developing a technology to generate pluripotent stem cells that does not require the use of human embryos.

Study: 30% of patients with TBI more likely to suffer from depression

Vanderbilt researchers conducting an extensive analysis of studies on traumatic brain injury, report today that 30 percent of TBI patients, or approximately 360,000 patients each year, will also suffer from depression after their injury.

Inhibitory effect of serotonin 1A receptor is extremely small in people with depression

Researchers at the MedUni Vienna have, for the first time, investigated the influence of the serotonin system on the default mode network (DMN) in the human brain and discovered that, in people with depression, the inhibitory effect of the serotonin 1A receptor is extremely small. This means, says Siegfried Kasper, Head of the University Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, that affected patients "are virtually never able to be mentally calm".
