The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation announced that five scientists with novel approaches to fighting cancer have been named 2011 recipients of the Damon Runyon-Rachleff Innovation Award. The grant of $450,000 over three years is awarded each year to early career scientists whose projects have the potential to significantly impact the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

More intensive treatment not associated with better outcomes in early bladder cancer

Patients with early bladder cancer who receive more intensive treatment within the first two years of diagnosis do not appear to have better survival than patients who receive less intensive treatment, according to a retrospective analysis published in the April 7 online issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Blood cancer drug trial results questioned by FDA

U.S. drug reviewers might limit the use of a Seattle Genetics Inc's experimental blood cancer drug due to the narrow scope of its clinical trials. According to papers released Tuesday by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it requests an advisory panel to consider the drug, under the proposed trade name Adcetris known chemically as brentuximab vedotin, for use in previously treated patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL).
