BSI publishes new standard to help protect vulnerable consumers

Despite technological advances, discrimination against consumers inhibited by disabilities or disadvantaged by personal circumstances remains a significant problem. Many people today find themselves excluded by mainstream, day-to-day services on which they rely, such as banks, utilities, telecoms, health services and local authority providers. Their vulnerability can be hidden, a consequence of personal trauma or a health condition, or temporary resulting from a job loss. These are complex issues for organizations to identify and respond to appropriately.

Online searches for unproven therapies for COVID-19

A new observational study by a group of scientists explores the rise in the public's fear-driven interest in unproven therapies for COVID-19, particularly chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, by tracking the internet searches relating to the purchase of drugs in news reports or publicized by public figures. They conclude: "Stay grounded in evidence and fight misinformation." The research letter and accompanying editorial comment are published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

Novel amyloid protein that induces amyloidosis discovered

A collaboration led by scientists at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Japan, has discovered a novel amyloid protein that induces amyloidosis in rats.

Free, confidential HIV testing at Northern California ‘Out of the Closet' locations

To commemorate World AIDS Day 2009, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), together with local partners, will offer free, confidential HIV testing at all five of its popular Bay Area "Out of the Closet" Thrift Stores on Tuesday, December 1st, from 12:00 noon to 7:00 p.m. The events are part of AHF's World AIDS Day 2009 "Testing Millions" campaign which seeks to test several million people for HIV in conjunction with this year's observance of World AIDS Day.
