Amerigroup first quarter total revenues increase 12.3% to $1.54 billion

Amerigroup Corporation today announced that net income for the first quarter of 2011 was $70.5 million, or $1.37 per diluted share, versus net income of $42.2 million, or $0.82 per diluted share, for the first quarter of 2010. Total revenues for the first quarter of 2011 increased 12.3% to $1.54 billion compared with $1.37 billion in the first quarter of 2010. Sequentially, total revenues increased 2.5% from the fourth quarter of 2010.

'Doctor Shopping': Data from California's prescription monitoring program

Research presented at the American Academy of Pain Medicine's 26th Annual Meeting provides early published data analyzing information gathered from California's prescription monitoring program, known as the Controlled Substances Utilization Review and Evaluation System (CURES). The analysis found a two-fold increase in the likelihood of individuals receiving opioids from multiple providers or "doctor shopping" when they were also being simultaneously prescribed a single additional class of a controlled substances, such as benzodiazepines or amphetamines.
