State highlights: States urge using life insurance for long-term care

State lawmakers are encouraging elderly residents to use life insurance as a way to pay for long-term care - and lower the Medicaid tab in the process. The strategy marks a tacit endorsement of so-called life settlements, a practice in which policyholders sell their policies at a discount in the secondary market and the buyer takes over premiums and consequently collects the death benefit (Greene, 6/16).

New research project to discover origin of myelodysplasia

The University of Navarra, together with the University of Oxford and three other European centres, are taking part in a project to discover the origin of myelodysplasia, an ailment with a predisposition to develop into leukaemia. In the work, patients from 19 hospitals in the north of Spain - including the University Hospital of Navarra - were analysed, as well as from England, Italy, Sweden and Germany.

Study reveals new social route of HIV transmission

Craigslist's entry into a market results in a 15.9 percent increase in reported HIV cases, according to research from the University of Minnesota published in the December issue of MIS Quarterly. When mapped at the national level, more than 6,000 HIV cases annually and treatment costs estimated between $62 million and $65.3 million can be linked to the popular website.

ConjuChem Biotechnologies completes non-dilutive capital transaction

ConjuChem Biotechnologies Inc. ("ConjuChem") (TSX:CJB) today announced the completion of the transaction providing $5 million in new, non-dilutive capital to the Company. The Superior Court of Québec has approved the previously announced plan of arrangement (the "Arrangement") under section 192 of the Canada Business Corporations Act (the "CBCA") involving ConjuChem and Colabor Income Fund ("Colabor"), among others, all as fully described in ConjuChem's management information circular dated July 17, 2009.
