Enrollment complete in Gemin X Pharmaceuticals' Phase 2 clinical trial of obatoclax for SCLC

Gemin X Pharmaceuticals, a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company developing novel, targeted cancer therapeutics, today announced the completion of patient enrollment in a Phase 2 clinical trial of the Company's lead product candidate obatoclax (GX15-070) for the treatment of extensive-stage small cell lung cancer (SCLC). The trial is designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of obatoclax, a novel pan Bcl-2 inhibitor, in combination with standard chemotherapy for the first-line treatment of patients with SCLC.

Medicare reconsiders paying for seniors' spine operations at surgery centers

Medicare is reviewing whether seniors should undergo spine surgeries at same-day surgery centers, the government-run health program announced Wednesday, five months after a USA Today Network-Kaiser Health News investigation revealed a spate of patient deaths following the procedures.

Elderly often have poor outcomes from surgery: Study

A new study has shown the ill effects of surgery in the elderly. Results of the Australian study shows that one in five older patients will suffer complications from surgery and one in 20 will die within 30 days. Lead author and Associate Professor David Story from the University of Sydney and his team looked at more than 4,100 patients aged over 70 for the study.

Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute to mark National Go Red for Women Day

Hundreds of health care professionals at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute will wear red on Friday, Feb. 3, to mark National Go Red for Women Day. The group will meet at 9 a.m. for a group photo to demonstrate support for increased research on heart disease, the No. 1 killer in the U.S. For the first time the annual gathering this year will include blood pressure checks and heart disease risk assessments.

Researchers win $2.3M grant to develop virtual reality simulator for training laparoscopic surgeons

Minimally invasive surgery is increasingly common and effective for operating inside the human abdomen. In these laparoscopic procedures, which use slender, handheld tools inserted into the body of the patient, the skill of the surgeon is the most important factor determining the success of the operation. A team of interdisciplinary researchers led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has won a $2.3 million federal grant to develop a touch-sensitive virtual reality simulator that will standardize how surgeons are trained and certified to perform laparoscopic procedures.
