A collaboration between computer scientists and geneticists at Stanford University has produced a novel technique for mapping the diversity of bacteria living in the human gut.
Cardiac marker POC tests are now widely used in hospitals and have emerged as a successful model of the concept of point-of-care diagnostics, according to a new report from Kalorama Information. The 2008 world market for POC cardiac enzymes and tests is estimated at $490 million, and growing at 12% a year for the past three years, according to "Point of Care Diagnostics 2010 and Beyond: Rapid Testing at a Crossroads," from healthcare market research publisher Kalorama Information.
AirXpanders Inc., a medical device company focused on the design, manufacture, sale and distribution of the AeroForm Tissue Expander, is pleased to report that its pivotal XPAND trial has met its primary endpoint in patients who have undergone a mastectomy.
The findings of a large international prospective study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology suggest for the first time that women with BRCA1 mutations should have preventive ovarian surgery (prophylactic oophorectomy) by age 35, as waiting until a later age appears to increase the risk of ovarian cancer before or at the time of the preventive surgery.
Treating people with mental ill health in hospitals with locked wards, as opposed to hospitals without locked wards, does not reduce their risk of suicide attempts or of unauthorised absence from hospital, also known as ‘absconding', according to a new 15-year study in Germany of around 145000 patient cases, published in The Lancet Psychiatry journal.
