Transition announces positive results from ELND005 AME and renal clearance studies

Transition Therapeutics Inc. today announced results from two phase 1 clinical studies of neuropsychiatric drug candidate ELND005. These studies, an absorption-metabolism-excretion ("AME") study and a renal clearance study, are specialized clinical pharmacology trials that are required by the United States Food and Drug Administration for the approval of most drugs in development.

Two questions to identify families whose young children suffer from hunger

Asking parents just two simple screening questions could help health care providers and social workers to easily and quickly identify families whose young children are suffering from hunger, enabling early interventions that could prevent serious health consequences, according to a new study led by University of Maryland School of Medicine researchers. The study, published July 1 in the journal Pediatrics, analyzed data gathered from more than 30,000 families nationwide, about a quarter of whom suffered from hunger.

Tumor cryoablation coupled with immunotherapy amplifies tumor immunity

Scientists at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit today presented data at the American Association for Cancer Research's 102nd Annual Meeting 2011 showing that when tumor cryoablation – or the freezing of tumor tissue while preserving tumor-associated antigens – is coupled with immune system modulation, the procedures have the potential to initiate or amplify tumor immunity.

Hormone link between diabetes and hypertension discovered

Physician researchers with The Ohio State University College of Medicine at the Wexner Medical Center say increased levels of the hormone aldosterone, already associated with hypertension, can play a significant role in the development of diabetes, particularly among certain racial groups.
