Takeda announces submission of azilsartan medoxomil NDA for hypertension to FDA

Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited (Takeda) announced today that Takeda Global Research & Development Center, Inc., U.S., submitted a New Drug Application (NDA) to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for azilsartan medoxomil (development code: TAK-491), an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) under investigation for the treatment of hypertension. Discovered by Takeda, azilsartan medoxomil is designed to lower blood pressure by blocking the action of a vasopressor hormone, angiotensin II.

AASLD publishes updated practice guidelines on hepatitis C

On Monday, September 26, 2011, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases published online at its journal Hepatology's website an update to its practice guidelines for hepatitis C – "An Update on Treatment of Genotype 1 Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infection: 2011 Practice Guideline by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases."

IMS supports new guidance on glucocorticoid use

The International Osteoporosis Foundation, along with the European Society for Calcified Tissue, launched new guidance on glucocorticoid use at the European Congress on Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (which took place in Bordeaux from March 21 - 24, 2012). Given the special relevance to postmenopausal women, the International Menopause Society (IMS) is supporting the publication of the guidance.

HIV prevention program undergoes "real world" evaluation

A programme that provides pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV infection among sexually active gay men has not seen one case of HIV infection since it began in 2012, according to the first "real world" evaluation of the regimen at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Medical Center.
