NJIT researchers awarded 15 new U.S. patents for research programs

NJIT researchers were awarded 15 new U.S. patents this past year, increasing the total number of issued patents for NJIT to 97. More than 150 applications are in process. With projected research expenditures greater than $90 million for 2010-11, NJIT ranks as a leader in size and growth of research programs among technological universities. The patents were awarded from July 1, 2009-June 30, 2010. Specifics follow.

Foreign aid for health services not significantly displaced, analysis says

In an article published in the May 8 edition of PLoS Medicine, Rajaie Batniji, an affiliate of the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI), and Eran Bendavid of FSI's Stanford Health Policy, found that a 2010 Lancet study by researchers at the University of Washington that "concluded that about half the money given to international governments for providing health care services isn't used as intended" is "flawed" and "should not be used to guide decisions about how much money to give and who should get it," according to a Stanford University news story.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Thurston Arthritis Center medical scientists and colleagues conducted the research. It focused on the knees of 940 participants enrolled in the Johnston County (N.C.) Osteoarthritis Project, a continuing, federally supported investigation of osteoarthritis that began 15 years ago and is headquartered at UNC.
