The Institute of Medicine is to be congratulated for sounding the call for more resources to fight hypertension (high blood pressure), the number two preventable cause of death and a leading contributor to heart disease and stroke. Heart disease and stroke are the number one and three overall causes of death of individuals in the United States.

New pediatric blood pressure guidelines can better predict kids at higher risk of heart disease

New guidelines that classified more children as having elevated blood pressure are better at predicting which kids are likely to develop heart disease when they reach adulthood, according to new research in the American Heart Association's journal Hypertension.

'Mentor Mothers' program improves perinatal health outcomes in South Africa

The incidence of HIV infection in South Africa tops that of any nation in the world, with some 6 million of the country's nearly 50 million residents infected. Sadly, young women — and particularly young pregnant women — suffer some of the highest rates of HIV infection. More than one-fourth of pregnant South African women are infected with the virus; in some communities, the infection rates are even higher.
