The Nation's largest occupational and environmental medicine conference, the 2010 American Occupational Health Conference (AOHC®) will be held May 2-5 at Rosen Shingle Creek in Orlando, Fla. AOHC is the annual meeting of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM), an international medical society of more 4,000 occupational and environmental physicians and other health care professionals.
Using whole genomic sequencing, scientists from RIKEN in Japan have for the first time demonstrated the profound effect that chronic hepatitis infection and inflammation can have on the genetic mutations found in tumors of the liver, potentially paving the way to a better understanding of the mechanisms through which these chronic infections can lead to cancer.
Eating fructose appears to alter cells in the digestive tract in a way that enables it to take in more nutrients, according to a preclinical study from investigators at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian.
The authors state that there are serious infectious, as well as non-infectious risks associated with blood transfusions and that it should now be viewed as a legal requirement for patients to be informed about specific risks posed by blood transfusions. This would work in the same way as they are currently informed about risks associated with the medical treatment and/or surgery they undergo.
