AutoGenomics introduces first automated molecular assay for Familial Mediterranean Fever

AutoGenomics, a leader in providing automated, molecular testing solutions, announced today that it has launched a new test for the identification of genetic mutations implicated in the development of Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF). The INFINITI® Familial Mediterranean Fever Panel provides simultaneous multiplexed determination of 13 genetic variants common to more than 10 afflicted ethnicities of Mediterranean origin on the automated INFINITI® Analyzer. FMF is prominently present in the Armenian people, Sephardi Jews, Greeks, Arabs and Turks.

Software tool accurately estimates risk of heart disease

University of Granada researchers have developed a software tool that makes an accurate estimation of the risk that a person has to suffer a heart disease. In addition, this software tool allows the performance of massive risk estimations, i.e. it helps estimating the risk that a specific population group has of suffering a heart condition. The researchers employed a sample including 3 000 patients.

Researchers evaluate use of regenerative human umbilical cord for in-utero spina bifida repair

In a study to be presented Saturday, Jan. 28, in the oral concurrent session at 8:45 a.m. PST, at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine's annual meeting, The Pregnancy Meeting, researchers evaluated a possible regenerative patch by using human umbilical cord in two studies titled Cryopreserved Human Umbilical Cord (HUC) vs Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM) for In-Utero Spina Bifida Repair and the study Conventional vs cryopreserved human umbilical cord (HUC) patch based on repair for in-utero spina bifida in a sheep model.

HPV chemicals cause harm to human health, environment

Every hour, an enormous quantity and variety of manmade chemicals, having reached the end of their useful lifespan, flood into wastewater treatment plants. These large-scale processing facilities, however, are designed only to remove nutrients, turbidity and oxygen-depleting human waste, and not the multitude of chemicals put to residential, institutional, commercial and industrial use.

Groundwater contaminants present potential health concern

More than 20 percent of untreated water samples from 932 public wells across the nation contained at least one contaminant at levels of potential health concern, according to a new study by the U.S. Geological Survey.
