Cardiac research in Sheffield has received a major boost from the British Heart Foundation in the form of an £800,000 award to develop a new gene therapy to treat cardiovascular disease (CVD).

ThromboGenics NV and co-development partner BioInvent International announce today positive results from their Phase II trial of TB-402. TB-402 is a novel, long acting anticoagulant that is being developed as a single injection for the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) following orthopaedic surgery.

The study is the first multi-center randomized clinical trial to evaluate the effects of moderate doses of steroids in ARDS patients when treatment is started 7 days or more after the onset of the condition.

For this purpose, they use certain enzymes, proteases that break down the tissue surrounding the tumor, thus opening the way for tumor cells to reach blood or lymphatic vessels. To keep the proteases in check, the body produces inhibitors such as the protein TIMP-1, which thwart the proteases in their work.
