New study sheds light on Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome

Newly published research by scientists at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, sheds light on a poorly understood, acute illness called Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome (IRIS) that develops in some HIV-infected individuals soon after they begin antiretroviral therapy.

FDA clears Toshiba's Auto-IMT ultrasound software tool

To enhance diagnostic efficiency, Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. has introduced Auto-IMT, an ultrasound software tool that can measure the thickness of the intima-media layers of the carotid artery, for evaluating an asymptomatic patient's risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Cancer patients more likely to suffer cognitive impairment, study finds

An international group of researchers has found cancer substantially affects memory, in the largest longitudinal cohort study assessing the impacts of the disease and its treatments on cognitive function.

Recommended supplementation not sufficient to normalise vitamin D levels in RA patients: Study

Two separate studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency is common in patients with a range of rheumatic diseases, with over half of all patients having below the 'normal' healthy levels of vitamin D (48-145 nmol/L) in their bodies. A further study assessing response to vitamin D supplementation found that taking the recommended daily dose did not normalise vitamin D levels in rheumatic disease patients.
