Researchers have developed a new tool to catalog police and law enforcement interactions with black men, the Police and Law Enforcement Scale, with the hope of documenting people's experiences and perceptions of police-based discrimination.

Music stars join hands to show how young people can help build a world without cancer

Some of the nation's rising music stars have joined the nation's first cancer center in an effort to show young people that they can help build a world without cancer. Roswell Park Cancer Institute created a new hip hop song and video called "How Big Is Your Heart." The MTV-like commercial features cancer patients and nurses dancing alongside professional dancers through the halls and lobby of the cancer hospital.

Germ cell removal may promote longevity

The gonad is well known to be important for reproduction but also affects animal life span. Removal of germ cells - the sperm and egg producing cells - increases longevity of the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms were a mystery. Now scientists at the Cologne-based Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, have discovered that germ cell removal flips a "molecular switch" that extends the life span by using components of a "developmental clock".

Adjuvant Ipilimumab improves survival after complete resection of high-risk stage III melanoma

Results of an EORTC trial appearing in The Lancet Oncology show that adjuvant Ipilimumab significantly improves recurrence-free survival in patients with completely resected stage III melanoma at high risk of disease recurrence, but that this treatment was also associated with a high rate of immune-related adverse events.

Role of race and health insurance status in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment

Researchers at The GW Cancer Institute, with funding from the National Cancer Institute, examined the effect of race and health insurance status on diagnostic and treatment delays over a 5-year period, with initial screenings going back 12 years, and found that race may play a larger role than previously thought when it comes to optimal diagnosis and treatment of black women with breast cancer.
