Stentys commences enrollment in its comparative stent study

Medical device pioneer Stentys announced today that the first patient has been enrolled into the ‘APPOSITION II' clinical study—a randomized trial comparing the Stentys self-expanding stent with a conventional balloon-expandable stent in AMI patients. The primary endpoint of the ‘APPOSITION II' study is stent strut apposition at day three post-procedure via extremely high-resolution OCT (optical coherence tomography) imaging.

Better way to predict survival in patients with HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer

According to Sturgis, the incidence of HPV-positive oropharyngeal carcinoma has increased dramatically in recent years. Although patients with HPV-positive disease have a better prognosis than those with HPV-negative disease, researchers are still seeking a better understanding of what group of patients is more likely to respond to treatment.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation calls on CA Governor to sign Assembly Bill 221 without delay

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the operator of the largest non-government HIV testing program in California, today praised the California Legislature for its passage of Assembly Bill 221, which cleared the Assembly on final concurrence (61-0) today and moves on to the Governor's desk. AB 221 updates and streamlines the training of counselors for rapid HIV testing by exempting persons administering finger stick rapid HIV tests from the requirement for certification as a limited phlebotomy technician (LPT). It is widely expected that Schwarzenegger will sign the bill.

Sleep disturbance may result in negative consequences among residents of ALFs: Study

In a study of residents of Assisted Living Facilities in Los Angeles showed that 65% had clinically significant sleeping problems and that poor sleep was associated with declining quality of life and increased depression over a six month follow-up period. This study is published today in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

People diagnosed with breast, bowel and ovarian cancers and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are today twice as likely to survive for at least 10 years as those diagnosed in the early 1970s according to new figures1 released by Cancer Research UK.
