Part of brain reorganizes to enhance visual abilities in deaf cats

Deaf or blind people often report enhanced abilities in their remaining senses, but up until now, no one has explained how and why that could be. Researchers at The University of Western Ontario, led by Stephen Lomber of The Centre for Brain and Mind have discovered there is a causal link between enhanced visual abilities and reorganization of the part of the brain that usually handles auditory input in congenitally deaf cats. The findings, published online in Nature Neuroscience, provide insight into the plasticity that may occur in the brains of deaf people.

Fibrin immunotherapy may resolve blood clotting induced by SARS-CoV-2

A group of researchers from the United States discovered that the spike glycoprotein of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can induce the formation of highly inflammatory blood clots amenable to neutralization by a fibrin-targeting monoclonal antibody – opening the door for a completely new strategy to reduce thrombotic inflammation in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Metabolic risk factors in overweight children linked with mild artery wall stiffness

Metabolic disorders, such as excess abdominal fat, raised blood pressure, higher levels of insulin, glucose and triglycerides and lower levels of the beneficial HDL cholesterol can be found in children as young as 6 to 8 years of age, according to a study carried out at the University of Eastern Finland.
