Women with HER2+ breast tumors who receive combination therapy unlikely to have cancer recur

In a new study, women with relatively small, HER2-positive breast tumors who received a combination of lower-intensity chemotherapy and a targeted therapy following surgery or radiation therapy were very unlikely to have the cancer recur within a few years of treatment, investigators at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and other research centers will report at the 2013 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

NRG1 gene plays an important role in cannabis dependence

A paper by Shizhong Han and colleagues in the current issue of Biological Psychiatry implicates a new gene in the risk for cannabis dependence. This gene, NRG1, codes for the ErbB4 receptor, a protein implicated in synaptic development and function.

MicroPhage receives $977,916 QTDP grant for development of MRSA/MSSA Blood Culture Test

MicroPhage, Inc. announced today that it has received two Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project (QTDP) grants totaling $977,916 from the IRS. The grants, awarded as part of the Affordable Care Act, apply to small-company R&D expenditures that reduce the cost and increase the quality of healthcare in the U.S. The grants will be applied to the development of MicroPhage's first product, the MRSA/MSSA Blood Culture Test, currently under review at the FDA.

Carondelet Health Network and Abrazo Community Health Network to stay in BCBSAZ network in 2016

The local, independent insurer Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona announced that Carondelet Health Network and Abrazo Community Health Network will remain part of the BCBSAZ network in 2016. The negotiations came to a close when Tenet Healthcare, the controlling entity for the two hospital systems, accepted a four-year deal.
