New review highlights promises and challenges of nanotechnology in neuroscience

Oral levetiracetam may be effective in stopping neonatal seizures

Seizures that occur in the first few weeks of life are a major predictor of future adverse neurological outcomes. Currently approved antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are effective in stopping seizures in less than 50% of these neonatal cases. The approved therapies can also have undesirable side effects.

Global food prices held steady in February, FAO food index shows

"Global food prices held steady in February as falling wheat prices offset higher oils and dairy prices, the United Nations' food agency said on Thursday, forecasting increased wheat output in 2013," Reuters reports, noting, "The FAO Food Price Index, which measures monthly price changes for a basket of cereals, oilseeds, dairy, meat and sugar, averaged 210 points in February, unchanged from January."

MAQUET Cardiovascular commences enrollment in trial of FUSION and FUSION BIOLINE Vascular Grafts

MAQUET Cardiovascular LLC today announced enrollment of the first patient in FINEST (FUSION Vascular Graft, FUSION Vascular Graft with BIOLINE and EXXCEL SOFT ePTFE). This prospective, randomized, single-blind, three-arm, parallel group, multi-center study is evaluating the safety and efficacy of MAQUET's investigational FUSION Vascular Graft and FUSION BIOLINE Vascular Graft, compared with its commercially available EXXCEL Soft ePTFE Vascular Graft in peripheral artery bypass surgery.

Cholera vaccines provide substantial protection for adults but less effective for children, review shows

A new review of the research literature led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health shows that cholera vaccines provide substantial protection for adults but provide significantly less protection for children under age 5, a population particularly at risk for dying from this diarrheal disease.
