Africa prepares for possible H1N1 flu outbreak amid concerns about HIV/AIDS, other diseases

African countries are preparing for the possibility that the H1N1 flu virus could expand in the continent, which already is experiencing epidemics of diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria, the AP/San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Science names HIV prevention trial as '2011 Breakthrough of the Year'

"The journal Science has chosen the HPTN 052 clinical trial, an international HIV prevention trial sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)," which found that early treatment with antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) reduced the risk of transmission among sero-discordant partners by 96 percent, as the "2011 Breakthrough of the Year," an NIH press release states (12/22).

Laureate Pharma sign development and manufacturing agreement with ZZ Biotech

Laureate Pharma, Inc., a full-service biopharmaceutical development and protein production company, today announced that it has entered into a development and manufacturing agreement with ZZ Biotech, LLC. According to the agreement, Laureate will produce Activated Protein C variant under cGMP conditions. Terms of the manufacturing agreement were not disclosed.
