Study shows lack of folic acid enrichment in Europe causes foaetal abnormalities

A new international study shows that 5,000 foetuses in Europe annually are affected by spina bifida and other severe defects on the central nervous system. Seventy per cent of these pregnancies are terminated, while increased mortality and serious diseases affect the children who are born. At least half of the cases can be avoided by adding folic acid to staple foods as is already being done in seventy non-European countries.

New research shows marijuana use may increase prediabetes risk

New research published in Diabetologia (the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes) shows that current and former users of marijuana are more likely to have prediabetes-the state of poor blood sugar control that can progress to type 2 diabetes-than never users of marijuana. However the researchers, led by Mike Bancks (University of Minnesota School of Public Health, Minneapolis, MN, USA) failed to establish a direct link between marijuana use and type 2 diabetes.

vRad stockholders approve merger agreement for acquisition by Providence affiliate

Virtual Radiologic Corporation ("vRad"), a national radiology practice and a leader in the development of radiologist workflow technology, and Providence Equity Partners, a leading global private equity firm that manages over $22 billion in equity capital, announced that earlier today vRad's stockholders approved and adopted the merger agreement providing for the acquisition of vRad by an affiliate of Providence. The transaction is valued at approximately $294 million and was completed today.
