Exposure to 'thirdhand smoke' poses additional health risks

Scientists are reporting that so-called "thirdhand smoke" - the invisible remains of cigarette smoke that deposits on carpeting, clothing, furniture and other surfaces - may be even more of a health hazard than previously believed. The study, published in ACS' journal, Environmental Science & Technology, extends the known health risks of tobacco among people who do not smoke but encounter the smoke exhaled by smokers or released by smoldering cigarette butts.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation: The Secrets of Massachusetts' Success - "By the summer of 2008, less than two years after Massachusetts' health reform law became effective, only 2.6 percent of state residents were uninsured—the lowest proportion ever recorded for any state." This study by the RWJF-funded State Health Access Reform Evaluation (SHARE) initiative "explains how national reforms can use similar methods to avoid the pitfalls that have plagued other coverage expansions."

Four-year follow-up results from SPRYCEL Phase 3 study in CML-CP presented at ASCO

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. today announced four-year follow-up results from a Phase 3 randomized, open-label, dose-optimization study of SPRYCEL® (dasatinib) in chronic-phase chronic myeloid leukemia (CML-CP) patients resistant or intolerant to Gleevec®* (imatinib mesylate). At four years, for all patients administered SPRYCEL 100 mg once daily, overall survival was 82% (95% CI: 76%-88%) and progression-free survival was 66% (95% CI: 57%-74%).

New research technique now available in Journal of Visualized Experiments

A new research technique, pioneered by Dr. Maria Angela Franceschini, will be published in JoVE (Journal of Visualized Experiments) on March 14th. Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School have developed a non-invasive optical measurement system to monitor neonatal brain activity via cerebral metabolism and blood flow.

Erlotinib can reduce lung cancer death by 26% : Study

Three times as many women with advanced lung cancer were alive and had no progression of their cancer 12 months after taking the drug erlotinib (also known as Tarceva) compared to those who did not receive the drug according to new data being presented at the ASCO1 conference today (Monday).
