Cook Medical files lawsuit against Endologix for patent infringement

Endologix, Inc., developer of minimally invasive treatments for aortic disorders, acknowledged today that it has become aware that Cook Medical has filed a lawsuit against Endologix in the United States District Court alleging that Endologix infringes two of Cook's U.S. patents.

Weight and mortality relationship appears to be stronger in adults without diabetes

Researchers ask diabetes status be taken into account in population studies that link weight and mortality. The relationship between body mass index (BMI) appears to be stronger in adults without diabetes than those with existing diabetes. These findingsĀ¹ are published in the Journal of General Internal MedicineĀ² in a study by Chandra Jackson of the Harvard School of Public Health and colleagues.

Inherited mutation links exploding chromosomes to cancer

An inherited mutation in a gene known as the guardian of the genome is likely the link between exploding chromosomes and some particularly aggressive types of cancer, scientists at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ) and the University Hospital, all in Heidelberg, Germany, have discovered.

Dengue fever emerges as major health threat in Gulf coast cities

Several cases of dengue fever, a potentially fatal viral disease transmitted by the bite of urban dwelling Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, have recently been reported in the continental United States. Prevalent in Central America and the Caribbean, dengue fever's most common symptoms include fever, chills, headache, and body aches lasting several days. The disease's more threatening form, dengue hemorrhagic fever, can cause internal bleeding, loss of blood pressure, and death. Over the past five years, outbreaks of both forms of the disease have been reported in Texas and Florida.
