Residents of socioeconomically deprived regions suffer from diabetes and obesity

Living in a socioeconomically deprived region is a risk factor for being affected by diabetes mellitus and obesity. This holds true regardless of the individual social status of the inhabitants. This is the conclusion reached by scientists from the Institute of Health Economics and Health Care Management at the Helmholtz Zentrum München and the Department of Epidemiology and Health Monitoring at the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin.

CryoLife second-quarter revenues increase 4% to record $29.3 million

CryoLife, Inc., an implantable biological medical device and cardiovascular tissue processing company, announced today its results for the second quarter of 2010. Revenues for the second quarter increased 4 percent to a second quarter record of $29.3 million compared to $28.2 million for the second quarter of 2009. Net income for the second quarter of 2010 was $2.9 million, or $0.10 per basic and fully diluted common share, compared to $2.5 million, or $0.09 per basic and fully diluted common share, for the second quarter of 2009.

Consortium receives EU grant to develop new treatment for leishmaniasis

Professor Sanjeev Krishna and colleagues at St George's, University of London are heading a consortium that has been awarded EUR3.75 million to develop a treatment for one of the world's most neglected tropical diseases, leishmaniasis.

Experts identify key challenges in youth with neurodevelopmental disabilities

In a study published today by the medical journal Paediatrics & Child Health, IRCM researchers address shortcomings in transitional care in the Canadian healthcare system. The team led by Eric Racine and Emily Bell, Montr-al neuroethics experts, identified important challenges in the transition from paediatric to adult health care, especially among youth with neurodevelopmental disabilities (such as autism spectrum disorders, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and cerebral palsy).

State licensure is required in each state in which a PT practices.
