Texas Legislature passes bill to halt Gov. Perry's executive order mandating HPV vaccine

The Texas House on Wednesday voted 135-2 to pass ( HB 1098 ) a Senate-approved bill that would prevent mandatory vaccination for middle school girls in the state until 2011, the New York Times reports (Blumenthal, New York Times , 4/26).

Women raped in war need access to safe abortion

"While there is welcome attention focused on the plight of women and girls raped in war, there are still significant gaps in the international response to this global scourge," Glenys Kinnock, founder and president of One World Action and a board member of the European Council on Foreign Relations, writes in the Guardian's "Poverty Matters Blog," adding that women who become pregnant as a result of rape in war need access to safe abortion services.

Insurer allegedly, automatically denies request for liver transplant: Trial commences on 22nd Feb

A trial beginning Monday targeting the nation's largest health insurer, WellPoint Inc., and its California subsidiary, Anthem Blue Cross, for allegedly automatically denying requests for out-of-network liver transplants will help shed light on the need for stronger health reform than is currently being considered, according to Consumer Watchdog.
