Despite the promising findings of the PROTECT Pilot study, the larger PROTECT trial found no difference with rolofylline versus placebo with respect of the primary and main secondary end-points of the study. Although more rolofylline patients than placebo patients experienced moderate or marked dyspnea improvement at 24 and 48 hours from randomization, this was counterbalanced by a lack of effect on persistent renal impairment. Lastly, the risk of important neurological events was increased in patients on rolofylline.
A team of researchers led by Worcester Polytechnic Institute Provost Wole Soboyejo has identified targeted drugs that reduced the sizes of hard-to-treat breast cancer tumors in mice without inducing the toxic side effects that are typically associated with conventional chemotherapy.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Centers for Medicare & Medicare Services (CMS) and the Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology have announced that the definition of "meaningful use" will include the use of evidence-based order sets and clinical decision support at the point of care. This is good news because the peer-reviewed scientific literature has repeatedly shown that clinical decision support and evidence-based order sets can save patient lives and reduce overall healthcare costs.
A study co-authored by a Saint Louis University researcher found telaprevir, a protease inhibitor, combined with standard hepatitis C treatment, cures a significantly higher number of difficult-to-treat patients than standard treatment alone. The findings were published in the April issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
