Hepatitis E vaccine successful in clinical trial: Study

In a Clinical trial in China, a vaccine has been found to protect against Hepatitis E. Hepatitis E virus, usually spread via contaminated food and faeces usually runs its course before the patient recovers. However it can cause severe illness in elderly people and has a mortality rate of 1 to 3 percent. It can also kill 5 to 25 percent of affected pregnant women and those who survive can suffer high rates of miscarriage. Around a third of the world's population have been infected by the virus say researchers.

Certain viral infections during pregnancy could cause behavioral changes in offspring

A study published in the journal Science found that activation in pregnant mice of a particular immune response, similar to what may occur with certain viral infections during pregnancy, alters the brain structure of the mouse offspring and causes behavioral changes, reminiscent of those observed in humans with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

PSI second-quarter 2010 revenue increases 10.4% to $502.7 million

Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. today announced financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2010. Revenue increased 10.4% for the quarter to $502.7 million from $455.3 million for the second quarter of 2009. Income from continuing operations attributable to PSI stockholders increased 12.9% to $39.0 million for the second quarter of 2010 from $34.6 million for the second quarter last year, and 11.3% per diluted share to $0.69 from $0.62.
