AAPA honors Col. John W. Bullock with 2010 Federal Service PA of the Year Award

Col. John W. Bullock, PA-C, DFAAPA, of Falls Church, Va., received the American Academy of Physician Assistants' 2010 Federal Service PA of the Year Award at the organization's 38th Annual Physician Assistant Conference in Atlanta yesterday. He was honored for his groundbreaking work on behalf of physician assistants. His decisions on policy, clinical research and acquisition have helped enable the medical workforce both at home and overseas to provide quality, effective and accessible care in all kinds of environments.

Superbugs and antibiotic resistance

Health experts come together today (Thursday) to warn that a new form of superbug that gives bacteria the power to resist virtually all known antibiotics is spreading quickly, posing a global health disaster. It is called New Delhi metallobeta-lactamase, or NDM-1 for short. This enzyme destroys carbapenems, an important group of antibiotics used for difficult infections in hospitals, and has been found in a wide variety of bacterial types. British researchers last August reported that infections involving NDM-1 had been found in patients in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Britain.

Hospira second-quarter 2010 net sales increase 1.2% to $968 million

Hospira, Inc., a leading global specialty pharmaceutical and medication delivery company, today reported results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2010. Net sales for the quarter were $968 million, and adjusted diluted earnings per share were $0.86.
