Phosphate binders may cause unexpected harm to blood vessels in patients with CKD

Drugs commonly prescribed to patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) may not be as strongly effective as once thought, and may cause unexpected harm to blood vessels, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN).

Cancer risk can be reduced with unique regulations for water treatment

Dr. Megan Rockafellow-Baldoni, Rutgers School of Public Health alum and Center for Public Health Workforce Development program coordinator, has found a reduction in the risk of cancer due to arsenic exposure in Hopewell Township (Mercer County), New Jersey with use of arsenic treatment systems. Arsenic exists in varying levels in all parts of New Jersey; chronic exposure can increase rates of bladder, lung, liver, kidney, and skin cancers.

Occupational exposure to synthetic fibers – a possible link with breast cancer

According to a recent report published in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, scientists have found that women during her mid 30's exposed to petrol products and synthetic fibers could treble the risk of developing breast cancer after menopause. According to the report, "Occupational exposure to nylon and acrylic fibers as well as to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons has higher risk of developing postmenopausal breast cancer."

Alexza begins Phase 2a study of AZ-002 for ARS-related epilepsy management

Alexza Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that it has initiated a Phase 2a study of AZ-002 (Staccato alprazolam), which is being developed for the management of epilepsy in patients with acute repetitive seizures (ARS).

Medicaid officials struggle with surge in long-term care needs

The company's naming of David J. McNichols comes as a consulting firm for the state is evaluating the current system of delivering care to Medicaid and PeachCare beneficiaries in Georgia. WellCare has part of that multibillion-dollar business, along with two other managed care companies. The state pays the three firms a total of more than $2.5 billion a year to serve the Medicaid and PeachCare populations.
