Trial of the antidepressant fluoxetine for teens with depression and substance use disorders

The antidepressant fluoxetine combined with cognitive behavioral therapy appears as effective for treating depression among teens who also have substance use disorders as among those without substance abuse problems, according to a report in the November issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Poll: Dwindling confidence in Obama's handling of health care

"Public confidence in President Obama's leadership has declined sharply over the summer, amid intensifying opposition to health-care reform that threatens to undercut his attempt to enact major changes to the system" according an ABC News/Washington Post poll, The Washington Post reports. "Among all Americans, 49 percent now express confidence that Obama will make the right decisions for the country, down from 60 percent at the 100-day mark in his presidency. Forty-nine percent now say they think he will be able to spearhead significant improvements in the system, down nearly 20 percentage points from before he took office."

Polio elimination hindered by unvaccinated children in Pakistan and Afghanistan

Too few children have received sufficient doses of vaccine to wipe out polio in Pakistan and Afghanistan, two of only three countries in the world where endemic polio has yet to be eliminated, according to new research published Online First in The Lancet. The findings suggest that the newly introduced bivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) has the potential to eliminate polio in these countries if sufficient numbers of children could be reached by vaccination programmes.

NHS spends a whopping on £60,000 a day on translation services: Report

A new report shows that Britain's NHS pays out £60,000 a day on translation and interpretation services, with Leeds among the highest spenders. Research by think-tank 2020Health showed NHS trusts spent £23.3 million on written translation and interpreters last year, an increase of 17% since 2007.

MicroPhage, Inc. announced today that it has received two Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project (QTDP) grants totaling $977,916 from the IRS. The grants, awarded as part of the Affordable Care Act, apply to small-company R&D expenditures that reduce the cost and increase the quality of healthcare in the U.S. The grants will be applied to the development of MicroPhage's first product, the MRSA/MSSA Blood Culture Test, currently under review at the FDA.
