EIS Action-Units to collate and disseminate life-saving information to disaster-hit populations

Thomson Reuters Foundation today announces the launch of a pioneering, first-of-its-kind service - The Emergency Information Service (EIS). Developed to respond to major natural disasters around the world, the new EIS will deploy expert Action-Units of journalists to scenes of major catastrophe where they will seek out, collate and disseminate life-saving information to disaster-struck populations, filling a critical gap in the chain of crisis information.

AHRQ: 12M people with mental health, substance abuse problems visited emergency department in 2007

Nearly 12 million visits made to U.S. hospital emergency departments in 2007 involved people with a mental disorder, substance abuse problem, or both, according to the latest News and Numbers from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. This accounts for one in eight of the 95 million visits to emergency departments by adults that year.

Relatively few seek relief from the health law's individual insurance mandate

Although people can seek exemptions from this requirement to buy coverage, only about 77,000 have done so, The Washington Post reports. UT Dallas professor awarded $2.3 million NIH grant to continue prosthetics, orthotics research

Dr. Robert Gregg, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering and bioengineering who joined the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science this fall, is a recipient of a $2.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for research that will combine robot control theory and physical rehabilitation to revolutionize and improve prosthetic limbs and orthotic devices.
