In multiple sclerosis, the immune system attacks nerves in the brain and spinal cord, causing movement problems, muscle weakness and loss of vision. Immune cells called dendritic cells, which were previously thought to contribute to the onset and development of multiple sclerosis, actually protect against the disease in a mouse model, according to a study published by Cell Press in the August issue of the journal Immunity.
Rutgers researchers have discovered how HIV-1, the virus that causes AIDS, resists AZT, a drug widely used to treat AIDS. The scientists, who report their findings in Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, believe their discovery helps researchers understand how important anti-AIDS treatments can fail and could help AIDS researchers develop more effective treatment for the disease.
DermTech, Inc., the global leader in non-invasive molecular dermatology, announced today it has completed enrollment in a clinical study to assess DNA damage induced by an excimer laser and evaluate the potential of topical agents T4 endonuclease and photolyase to reduce DNA damage induced as measured through gene expression analysis.
