Loneliness in Parkinson's disease may increase risk for symptom severity

Research from UCLA scientists and colleagues from other institutions finds that people with Parkinson's disease who lack meaningful social interactions may be at an increased risk for severe symptoms related to the disease.

New tuberculosis vaccine provides better protection

Nele Festjens and Nico Callewaert of VIB and Ghent University have improved the efficacy of the vaccine for tuberculosis. The new vaccine affords - as already proven in mice - better protection against the disease. The development of a new tuberculosis vaccine is a priority in the fight against the disease which claims the lives of 1.7 million people each year. The current vaccine provides only partial protection.

Extreme morning sickness drug comes at a price

Women, who suffer from an extreme form of morning sickness called hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), are shelling out $7,000 for a drug not yet approved for use by expectant mums because they are desperate to control their illness. HG leads to severe nausea, dehydration and fatigue and may require hospitalization. It affects up to 3 per cent of pregnant women - about 9,000 per year in Australia. It may lead to termination of the pregnancy.

Vaginal progesterone decreases preterm birth, infant mortality in twin gestations with short cervix

Treatment with vaginal progesterone reduced the risk of preterm birth, neonatal complications and death in pregnant women with twins and who have a short cervix— a risk factor for preterm birth— according to a meta-analysis of individual patient data by researchers at the National Institutes of Health, the Wayne State University School of Medicine, the Detroit Medical Center, and other institutions in the United States and abroad.
